Humanitarian Protection

Humanitarian protection is a form of immigration status. It is granted to a person who it decides has a need for protection but who does not meet the criteria for refugee status.
People in Hungary can also be given Humanitarian Protection (HP) which means that the Hungarian government believes that if the people return to their country of origin their human rights will be infringed in an unacceptable way. Therefore they are given leave to remain to protect those rights for five years, after which time they can be granted indefinite leave to remain if they still need protection.
